Kickstarter Question for you

A Question for anyone who is, has, or may in the future contribute to Kickstarter campaigns. Let's say, hypothetically speaking, I am raising funds to finish and print a hardcover book, to be released next year. Also, there is a publisher, who will be distributing the book to retail outlets afterwards (without the Kickstarter funds, this likely won't happen). The cover price in stores for the book will be $25. Here's the question: Through Kickstarter, would you pay $30? As an extra incentive, each copy would include a custom signed/numbered bookplate, and a digital PDF copy. To be clear there would be no $25 level to get the book, 30 is the cheapest you could get the physical book through Kickstarter. There would be a lower tier for just the PDF. Would you do it? Would you be okay with that, even if you, several months later, saw the bookplate-less edition sitting in the store for $5 cheaper? Please, let me know in the comments. Thank you!

No. First, I usually look for a digital version at a lower level, rather than get a physical copy. Digital versions tend to deliver much sooner and more reliably than print versions. If no digital version is offered, I'm comparing your Kickstarter not to the cover price, but to the cover price minus the discount I'm likely to get from a retailer. So now you're asking if I'll pay $30 for a book that I can probably get for around $17.50. The extras would have to be more significant than being signed and numbered for me to pay an extra $12.50.

Yes, I probably would pay the extra $5 to get the book if it meant the book would get published. Most of the time I tend to go with the digital option if available. The reason being is I'm in Canada and shipping tends to be an extra $10. It's easier for me just to order the book from a Canadian book store at that point and save the shipping costs.

Yes, there will be a digital option for a lower price, but I'm just wondering about this particular situation with the printed book right now.

Thanks for the comments!

Yes, I would pay the extra $5, no problem. Having the limited signed bookplate is worth it but more importantly it would help put your book in stores for everyone else.

For me, this is an easy yes.

I wouldn't have an issue with paying an extra $5 for a signed and numbered copy as well as a digital version of the book at all.

One thing I would say get your head around before launching is how much shipping would be so you can have that information included in the prices or as Kickstarter has at the moment you can add the international shipping cost on top of what the pledge level is

I don't care about digital. I do lok for incentives -- signed/numbers, sketched in, etc.

Absolutely. I'd sign up now, if you set up the Kickstarter.
